For the purposes of this guide, the states South of the Sahara include the countries formed from the colonies of French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa: Benin (formerly Dahomey), Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta), Chad, Central African Republic, Gabon, and Congo; as well as the two West African states (former German colonies, then French protectorates) Togo and Cameroon.
