Resources within the University of Toronto 

  • Employee & Family Assistance Program is available to employees of the University of Toronto and their dependents: spouses, partners and dependent children. This program is provided at no cost to you. 
  • Student Support Call. Chat. Anytime. Anywhere. Student Support connects students with free, confidential emotional health and wellbeing support conveniently available 24/7 via the app, telephone and web. 
  • U of T employees: Don’t forget to add your child to health insurance within 30 days of arrival by contacting the person who administers your benefits.

Expecting a baby/child soon? Here’s some important information. Depending on how you are growing your family, some information will apply, and other information may not be applicable.  

  • What to bring for birthing - If you are giving birth in a hospital, your hospital likely has a list of items to bring with you. We’ve linked to a sample list. If you are under the care of a midwife and birthing at home or a birthing centre, please communicate with your midwife. 
  • Newborn baby checklist Today’s Parent guide to what you need to prepare for taking home a newborn. 
  • Car seats If you are going to ride with your child in a car, read through Parachute’s guide to choosing an appropriate car seat. 
  • Register a birth/get a birth certificate. You may be able to use the 5-in-1 newborn bundle to register your child’s birth, apply for a birth certificate, apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), apply for Canada child benefits (including the Ontario-specific child benefits) and request an Education Savings Referral. 
  • If your baby qualifies for OHIP coverage, hospital staff or a registered midwife will give you an Ontario Health Coverage Infant Registration form.

Mental Health Support for New Parents 

  • Employee & Family Assistance Program is available to employees of the University of Toronto and their dependents: spouses, partners and dependent children. This program is provided at no cost to you. 
  • Mother Matters is an online support group for birthing parents with mood/adjustment challenges following the birth of their baby run by the Mental Health Program at Women’s College Hospital. 
  • Fathers Mental Health: Mental healthcare for fathers in pursuit of healthy families.
