Non-profits and registered charities

Hospitals are an example of non-profit entities controlled by the government. They are part of a group of entities that include Municipalities, Universities, Schools, and Hospitals (MUSH). These entities are funded in part by the government and are also responsible for securing additional funding to operate. This fundraising is often done via a foundation, which means many public institutions are also registered charities.

In Ontario, hospitals are legislated by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, and are required by the Public Hospitals Act to provide "financial reports and returns" which are publicly accessible.

Unlike publicly traded for-profit companies, however, there is no public database of MUSH filings available in Ontario. To find an annual report or audited financial statements from a hospital or other publicly controlled institution, use a Google Advanced Search.
