Background

Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto Act (R.S.O.1990 c. M62) : The City of Toronto's power came from the Municipal Act until 2006

City of Toronto Act (2006) (e-Laws) establishes the City and its governance

City of Toronto Act 1997 (no.1) (S.O. 1997, c. 2)

  • the act that amalgamated 7 municipal governments (East York, York, Scarborough, Etobitcoke, North York, City of Toronto and Metro Toronto) into the Toronto "megacity"
  • Even though these municipalities no longer exist, some of their by-laws are still in force
  • Their legacies live on in the existence on Council of Community Councils

City of Toronto Act 1997 (no.2) (S.O. 1997, c.26) laid out the amalgamated city's powers
