Just getting started with research is often the most difficult step. Having a personal connection to your research makes getting started and moving through the process much easier, more meaningful, and authentic. So, while keeping within the boundaries of your assignment, begin by thinking about what you would like to learn.
Map mapping is a simple, yet powerful, technique used by many disciplines to help visualize the research thought-process. This short video (2:52 min) from UCLA Libraries provides a useful introduction to mind mapping for the purpose of identifying and refining your research topic.
