Student Journals and Open Access: An Important Part of a Big Movement

Presenters:

  • Juan Pablo Alperin, Scientific Director, Public Knowledge Project, and Associate Professor, Publishing Program, Simon Fraser University
  • Leigh-Ann Butler, Scholarly Communications Librarian, University of Ottawa
  • Lucìa Céspedes, Research Advisor, Érudit

Host:

  • Mariya Maistrovskaya, Senior Publication Support Specialist, Public Knowledge Project

Description:

Almost all student journals in Canada publish in open access, meaning that anyone, anywhere with access to the internet can read their articles for free. This may seem like an obvious choice, but it’s not: open access is a principled decision that responds to many important issues in research today. Come and learn from noted experts in the field about open access, why it is important not just for student journals but for all journals, and how you are contributing to an international movement to increase access to knowledge and redefine equitable participation in research production.

Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Publishing

Presenters:

  • Christie Hurrell, Acting Associate University Librarian, University of Calgary
  • Brianna Calomino, Digital Projects Librarian, University of Calgary

Description:

In this session, we will introduce the basics of machine learning and AI and then discuss some of the key issues that peer reviewers and editorial teams must consider when using AI tools (or not) in the publishing process.

By the end of this session, learners will:

  • Have a basic understanding of how machine learning and large language models are built and function.
  • Be aware of key issues for academic authors considering the use of AI tools, including authorship, citation, and ethics.
  • Be aware of some of the benefits and risks of using AI tools in the editorial process.
  • Understand some of the ethical considerations of identifying AI-generated content in the editorial process.
  • Explore the link between AI tools and copyright considerations when evaluating others’ work.
  • Use existing resources and tools to develop an AI policy or statement for a particular journal.
