ORCID is an international, interdisciplinary, open, non-proprietary, and not-for-profit organization created by the research community.
An ORCID iD is a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from other researchers and provides a record of automatic links among all your professional activities. ORCID iDs and connections are stored in the ORCID Registry, in an account you own and manage.
Having an ORCID iD helps...
Make your works discoverable by other researchers and organizations by linking all your research activities together
Maintain accuracy of automatically updated information through the verification of trusted organizations
Save time by including your iD (when prompted) in grant application and manuscript submission platforms
Ensures profile accuracy through use of green check marks to verify trusted sources of data
Anyone who participates in research, scholarship, or innovation can register an ORCID iD for themselves free of charge.
Consult the ORCID Help Center for information on how to:
Add or update biographical information
Add or update affiliations
Set your peer review preferences
Understand the metadata associated with your record
There are several ways research output works (including publications, data sets, conference presentations, etc.) can be added to your ORCID record.
Use DOI and other publication IDs (e.g., PubMed ID) to populate works onto your ORCID record as instructed here.
If your work exists on other databases, it can be imported via a Search & Link Wizard by following the instructions here.
For work on systems that are not yet interoperable with ORCID (such as Google Scholar Citations), BibTeX files can be used following the instructions here.
Data in your ORCID record can be downloaded into XML files by following these steps.
Works in your ORCID record can be downloaded using the BibTex export tool.
ORCID iDs are fully owned and controlled by the researcher for which they represent. While your ORCID iD number is visible to everyone, you can change the visibility settings for all other information on your ORCID record. Information marked as ‘visible only to me’ can only be seen by you. No-one can update your ORCID record without your permission.
