MGT232H5: Business Finance II

A course guide to support students in their group assignment for MGT232.

Evaluating Sources

It is essential to critically evaluate the source materials you find. Not all sources, whether electronic or print, provide trustworthy information. Appropriate source materials for your assignments include scholarly and professional databases and resources that are licensed by the university as well as some open web resources such as government and company websites.

HINT: It’s often easier to find relevant, quality sources through the library’s resources! Find useful resources for your group video assignment in the Suggested Resources tab on the left.

How to Evaluate Sources

Look at your sources and critically reflect on:

  • Timeliness: is the information current and up to date?
  • Expertise of the author or provider of the information: Is this a credible and authoritative source?
  • Can you identify bias? Consider especially when evaluating news and information from companies or open web resources.
  • Are there discrepancies or conflicts within research or across different sources used?
  • Can you locate references and methodology used by your sources?
