Database Search Tips

Knowing HOW to search is just as important as important as knowing WHAT to search.

To get better results faster from your research using the databases listed below, please review this tip sheet from UBC's David Lam Management Library.

Find News and Periodical Articles

Use these databases to find newspaper articles and articles from trade or industry journals about a company's deals or deal strategy.

Covers 31,000+ newspapers, trade and industry journals, newswires and websites from around the world. Includes online full-text of Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal. To search for articles about a specific company, use the pull-down menu besides Company to search for and select a company; it will appear in yellow above the search box. To search for articles about a company's deals, try searching on the target (or acquirer) company and then the acquirer (or target) company and select the 'And' option. Also try 'Mergers' as as subject term.

Business Source Premier This link opens in a new window
Indexes 2,000+ academic and trade & industry journals. Includes MarketLine company profiles with SWOT analyses. Also offers online full-text of Harvard Business Review. To search for articles about a specific company, use the pull-down menus to select 'Company Entity' and enter the company name. Click Search and then 'View Results' to see articles. For articles about specific deals, try searching on both company names or use the Thesaurus look-up feature to find subject headings related to mergers.

ProQuest
A database platform that includes key management and business databases such as ABI/Inform, CBCA (Canadian Business & Current Affairs), and Accounting & Tax. Click on the 'Databases' tab at the very top to select the specific databases to search; most of the management databases will be found in the 'ProQuest Central' group. Use the pull-down menu besides the first search box to select 'Company/organization - ORG' as the field to search and enter the target or buyer company's name. Use the pull-down menu besides the second search box to select 'Subject heading (all) - SU) as the field and use the 'Look Up Subjects' link to select one or more appropriate subject headings, e.g. 'acquisitions and mergers.''.
