Consumer Health

This guide will help you locate and navigate resources related to consumer health and general health information. This page is intended especially for members of the public who are not affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Using Gerstein

Gerstein Science Information Centre is a self-help library.

Information Desk staff can give general directions and brief instructions for resources so you can do your own research.

Using Online Resources:

Please note that guests do not have access to WiFi.

However, members of the public can access Gerstein's online resources by using the public terminals. There are 5 computers called LIRA workstations available for public use:

  • You will need a driver's license or credit card or other scannable identification to establish a guest account

  • If you have issues with the machine, see the staff at the Loan Services Desk

To establish a guest account, go to the workstation closest to printer station number one and follow the posted instructions

  • Guest accounts have a limited duration as shown on the printed receipt after scanning the identification document

  • The 5 computers for the public have yellow LIRA signs & are located near the Information Desk

Printers:

In order to use the printers, you will first have to: 

  1. Purchase a guest card, which costs $5. You can re-use the card during future visits to the library.
  2. Add money for printing to your card using the cash-to-card machine. Debit, credit, and cash are accepted.

The following printers are available:

  1. Black & White:
    • available from all PCs 
    • 2 printers (Wallace Room and near Information Desk)
    • cost is $0.15 per side
    •  double-sided by default
  2. Colour:
    • available from all PCs
    • near Information Desk
    • cost for colour printouts: $1.00/page for letter and legal; $2.00/page for tabloid
    • cost for black & white printouts: $0.20/page for letter and legal; $0.40/page for tabloid
    • double-sided printing available

Borrowing Books:

Anyone visiting Gerstein may consult any of our books in the library. To borrow books and take them home you will have register. See more information on becoming an alumni or an external researcher or an associate member.

Photocopiers:

  • 3 photocopiers available
  • visitor photocopy card; one takes coins
  • visitor photocopy card or $0.15 with coins (change is not provided in the library)

Scanners:

  • 5 available
  • scan to a USB stick 
  • scanning is free
