Reference resources such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, etc. are excellent resources to begin your research for background information. Finding background information will help you find relevant scholarly sources and can provide broad overviews of a topic allowing you to understand the main concepts/ issues, major dates and events of a subject, keywords and subject-specific vocabulary terms that can be used when searching databases, as well as bibliographies that lead to additional resources.
