1. Public companies have to disclose certain information, including financials, private companies do not. Disclosure depends on jurisdiction for public companies.
2. Private companies include subsidiaries (i.e. FedEx Canada), start-ups (can go public later), partnerships like consulting or law firms, etc. If a company was public but is now private, the Mergent database will often have their older filings and financial infomation.
3. Electronic filings are generally from 1997 onwards. Pre-1997, there are resources in Mergent Archives with scanned annual reports or other historical data.
