Overview Sources (definitions, terminology, greater historical context)

The category of sources below are called "reference sources" (encyclopedias, handbooks, domain-specific dictionaries and more). They provide background information about a significant event, concept or theory. These are a great place to start your research, because the entries/articles in reference works tend to:

  • deepen your understanding of topics and terminology from class discussions or assigned readings
  • provide significant dates, time periods the names of associated scholars, theorists and significant figures
  • provide additional terminology that you can use as search terms to locate more in-depth sources (articles, book chapters, etc.)
  • suggest sub-topics or related concepts and those may suggest a specific research question(s) or help you narrow down/focus your topic for a writing or presentation assignment.

Many in the list below are comprehensive enough to incorporate and cite in your assignment as one of the scholarly sources for your "Essay on a Psychoactive Substance" (when in doubt, please check with the Professor).
