Ecclesiastical Latin

Welcome to the Kelly Library Research Guide to Ecclesiastical Latin.

For hundreds of years, the majority of Christian theological texts were written in Latin.  Even today, the official editions of most Catholic liturgical works are published first in Latin before being translated into other languages.

Ecclesiastical Latin differs somewhat from classical Latin: it has developed its own specialized vocabulary, and sometimes uses grammatical or spelling variants.

This guide highlights some useful resources for students of ecclesiastical Latin.

Students of the Toronto School of Theology can request scans of print-only resources - subject to copyright limitations - by filling in the online Kelly InfoExpress form.
