Why use encyclopedias or dictionaries?

Encyclopedias and dictionaries define your terms, find quick facts, and get an overview of an event, theory, time period, etc.  Encyclopedias are also useful starting points for gathering preliminary information on your topic. Many of these resources provide suggestions for further reading.
