What are subject headings?

Library of Congress subject headings are the vocabulary by which librarians describe and organize items in the collection

Subject headings may be different from the natural language used to describe topics:

Natural language		Library of Congress subject headings
Rights of women in Israel	>	Women's rights Israel
A history of Israel and Palestine relations	>	Jewish-Arab relations
Six-day war	>	Israel-Arab War, 1967

To find relevant subject headings to your topic

Note that Jewish studies is interdisciplinary; thus, you might want to combine these terms with subject headings specific to your area.

Why transliterate?

You can search the library catalogue for sources in languages that don't use roman scripts (such as Hebrew, Inuktitut, etc.)

How do I transliterate?

You'll primarily use the Library of Congress' Hebrew/Yiddish tables for transliteration in Jewish studies
