Why use databases?

There are many reasons to search for information in library databases for your research projects.

  • Databases are designed with the needs of academic researchers in mind, and make finding relevant articles among the huge amount of published scholarly literature much quicker and more effective.
  • Some databases are discipline-specific and contain specialized subject matter.
  • Discipline-specific databases have unique features and controlled vocabularies, built specifically for searching in that discipline!

Tips for Accessing Articles

If you find an article through one of the databases listed above, accessing the full PDF of an article is often as simple as clicking a "Get Full Text" or "Get it at UTL" link in the article record. Whether you're on or off campus, you'll need to sign in with your UTORid and password to connect to online resources like articles that we have licenses to access at U of T. This proves to the publisher that you are a U of T student and should have access to the content.
