Consider the following when reviewing a publication:

  • Does the author acknowledge their sources?
  • Is the content substantial, appear to be valid and well-researched, and make sense with your background knowledge or other articles' knowledge in the field?
  • Is the writing scholarly and professional?  Does data appear to support the content in a scholarly manner or is it sensational and attention-getting?
  • Is the article listed as peer-reviewed?
  • Is the article written for experts in the field or members of the general public?
  • Is the article published in a scholarly journal?  Check the journal's submissions policies if necessary.
