JSTOR for Images

A libguide to support your use of finding and using images in JSTOR.

Basic Search

You can search for JSTOR images using the Basic search, right from the JSTOR homepage. There is also an option to use the Advanced search, described below. Make sure that you have selected the "Images" tab.

Simply type in the search term that you are interested in (an artist's name, a particular artwork or image, etc). From the Basic search, JSTOR will offer up selections such as creator, title, work type, etc., and search for you within the specified field, or you can choose the "Just search for" option.

Select the magnifying glass icon to run your search:

By selecting a field like "Creator," you may get fewer results, but they will be more relevant to what you need. If you are interested in finding images by Agnes Martin, Creator is a good choice. If you want to find everything on Agnes Martin (for example, images of Agnes Martin), "Just search for" is a good option.

JSTOR Images - Advanced Search

The Advanced Search allows you to do a more focused search. Navigate to the Advanced search from the home screen, and make sure that you have selected "Images."

Enter the term(s) that you are interested in, and select the field within which you want to search. You will notice that you can join terms using Boolean Operators in the Advanced Search. Here, I want to find images that Agnes Martin has created, so I have entered her name, and selected "Creator" as the field within which I want to search. Additionally, I am only interested in her paintings (rather than her prints and drawings) so I entered that term, joined it using the boolean operator "AND," and indicated that this term be searched using the "Work Type" field.

You can select the image that you are interested in, and you will be taken to a detailed view. You will see that the image has extensive metadata, and you can zoom in and out, fit to screen, and compare images as well.
