What is Peer Review?

Peer review is...

  • the process by which scholars review each other's work to ensure a high level of scholarship in a journal and to improve the quality and readability of a manuscript.
  • applied to both primary articles (i.e. articles which present original research) and review articles (i.e. which summarize original research.)

Note: 'Peer-reviewed' and 'refereed' are synonyms.

Scholarly books are written by scholars, like your professors, who are discipline experts. Scholars write scholarly books to share in-depth information about a specific topic or event within their specific field of expertise to add further discussion and critique.
