Keep in mind that you won't need to read the entire book. Often with scholarly books each chapter is a standalone topic. Some books are anthologies (collections individual essays by various authors, related to a broad topic). In addition to the chapter you're interested in, it's a good idea to at least skim the introduction to learn about the greater context and overarching themes.
