If you are unsure how to identify the page number in the ebook you are using, please visit or contact the Reference and Research Desk for assistance.
For the Research Sources assignment, you are required to “provide a clear image of any one page of text from the source, and make sure that it shows the page number (the page number and the text on the page must be clearly readable, so provide a good quality image)”
This page shows how to identify page numbers and download the necessary page(s).
As a UofT students, you have access to various ebook platforms, such as:
The Library Guide provides a short list of ebook platforms particularly relevant to this course.
All of these platforms allow you to download a PDF version of the entire ebook, a chapter, or a small section. The downloaded content is equivalent to the print copy in terms of layout and pagination. This means that the page numbers are original, provided by the publisher.
Downloading a PDF copy not only helps you meet the course requirement by providing a proper image, but also allows you to store the file on your device and highlight text as needed.
However, some ebook platforms, such as ProQuest Ebook Central nad Oxford Academic, now default to a reflowable format, which makes it difficult to identify the original publisher-provided page numbers.
I will walk you through switching to the original book format. See the instructions below.Let's look at an example using the reflowable format.

Click “Read Online.” (You can also click “Download Book,” but it will not allow immediate download.)

This is a reflowable format.
First, click X in the top right corner to close the AI “Research Assistant BETA.” (Note: There is currently no way to fully disable this feature.)

Click the book icon on the top bar, then select “Switch to PDF.”
(Ignore the “Download” button that prompts you to sign in. You do not need to sign in to download the section you need.)

Once in the fixed layout, you may need to close the AI Research Assistant BETA again.

Due to license restrictions, you cannot download the entire 672-page book at once.
First, locate the section you need. Use the “Table of Contents” icon to search within the ebook or navigate through the contents.

As you are currently viewing the book in the fixed layout, the page number should be shown in the top right corner.
(Note: page numbers may differ if the count begins from preliminary sections such as the copyright page, table of contents, or dedication. Publishers often use Roman numerals or omit numbering entirely for these sections. Always refer to the page number shown in the book itself. This is the publisher’s official pagination and should be used for your assignment.)

In the previous screenshot, you may have noticed a printer icon at the top centre of the page. Click on it to open the print pop-up window. (Although it appears to be a print icon, it is actually used for downloading pages.)
For this particular ebook, the license agreement allows you to download up to 215 pages.
If you only need one page image, you need to choose the current page. For reading and annotating as part of your research, download the section you need. (Also view How to Find and Download Ebooks (YouTube Videos)
While the machine-generated citation may not always be accurate, you can select the citation style required by your assignment instructions.

Here is an example from a different platform: Oxford Academic (Oxford University Press).
On this page, you will see an HTML version of the chapter following the Abstract, Keywords, Subject, and Collection.
To view the original publisher-provided pagination, you need to download the PDF.
