The literature of science: primary, secondary and tertiary sources, helps you fill in the narrative of what has already been done in a field of research, and why.

Primary sources are journal articles written by the researchers to document new findings. Journal articles are very specific and rarely give you the context. Secondary sources (like review papers or books) use the information in the primary sources to give you the big picture.
