Includes course readings and information on library research tools and strategies.

Using the Library Catalogue

The University of Toronto Libraries catalogue allows you to easily find books (both print and e-books) on your topic at all the libraries on the three campuses (St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga) for the following types of publications:

  • books and ebooks
  • periodicals (scholarly journals, popular magazines, newspapers, but not individual articles)
  • audio-visual material (such as DVDs)
  • maps
  • government publications.

Sorting the Results

Search results can be refined by different filters. They are located on the left side of the page:

  • Refine your search: place a checkmark beside Online to find ebooks and other online sources
  • Library: the physical location where the title is located on campus
  • Publication year: use this filter to find the most recent publications on your topic.

Finding Books on the Same Subject

In addition to the standard searching by keywords, an excellent way of finding books on the same topic is to click on the subject headings associated with a particular title:

  • subject headings briefly describe what each book is about (usually in one to three words)
  • clicking on the book's subject heading will lead you to other titles on the same topic
  • subject headings are listed under the call number of each title under Subjects.

The book entitled Locations of Buddhism: Colonialism and Modernity in Sri Lanka is associated with the following subjects:

  • Buddhism and politics—Sri LankaHistory19th century.
  • BuddhismRelationsChristianity.
  • BuddhismSri LankaHistory19th century.
  • BuddhistsSri LankaBiography.
  • Christianity and other religionsBuddhism.
  • Sumaṅgala, Hikkaḍuvē Śrī, 1827–1911.

Subject headings that are assigned to individual titles are sometimes broad:

  • combine different subjects as keywords
  • alternatively, use the filters on the left side of the page to narrow down your search.
