Citing Generative AI
MLA, and Chicago Manual of Style have released guidelines on citing generative AI in your work.
Do note that these citation styles may be subject to change in the future.
MLA Guide to citing generative AI
Following the guidelines in section 1.7 of the MLA Handbook, the format is as follows:
Title of source (describe what was generated)
AI tool
Version
Publisher
Date created
Location (general URL)
For example:
Fabric print of farm animals, Midjourney ver 5.2, Midjourney Inc., 18/07/2023, https://www.midjourney.com/home
Chicago-Style recommends including the following information:
BIBLIOGRAPHY FORMAT
Name of AI Tool. Response to "Text prompt used." AI-generated image. Developer's Name, Date generated.
BIBLIOGRAPHY EXAMPLE
Midjourney v 5.2. Response to "Cat with a mustache in the style of Lord of the Rings" AI-generated image. Midjourney Inc, July 18th, 2023.
