WHAT IS THE GREATER TORONTO AREA (GTA)?

Regions in the GTA

The Greater Toronto Area is comprised of Canada’s biggest city by population, the City of Toronto, and 4 surrounding Regional Municipalities each of which have their own elected governing structure. These are recognized as Upper tier municipalities. Under each of the Regional Municipalities is a set of lower tier municipalities who also have their own elected council and services. There are 24 Lower tier municipalities in the GTA.
