You can use AND, OR, or NOT to help narrow down results. Some databases, such as ProQuest, will include these options in dropdowns in their search boxes. Canada AND manufacturing; car OR auto; Canad* AND Tires NOT "Canadian Tire"
Truncation - using the * symbol - can help broaden the search, i.e. lab*r to find labour or labor; polic* to find policy, policies (will also find police and policing; you can use NOT to eliminate those).
For exact phrases, use quotation marks "railway expansion" "Canadian Tire".
