Start Your Research

1.  Select academic sources on your topic from your assignment hand-out.  

  • Example article: 
    • Li, S., & Zizzi, S. (2018). A case study of international students’ social adjustment, friendship development, and physical activity. Journal of International Students8(1), 389–408. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1134317

2.   Find full-text of the articles you selected.  

3.  Check the reference list (bibliography) of each article you selected to look for more sources on your topic.  Find full-text copies of these articles. 

4.  Want to find more sources on your topic?   Look up any relevant sources in Google Scholar.   Check "Cited by" and "Related articles."

Find More Articles

Search the following popular databases for more sources on your topic.  Look for full-text buttons or links (e.g. "PDF", "Full-text", "Get IT") to download any articles you find on your topic.   

Example Search:

I want to research how culture shock affects international students at university.

"culture shock" AND "international students" AND (university OR college OR "higher education")

Search Tips:
  • Keyword:   Choose the main ideas from your topic e.g. culture shock, international students, university
  • Phrase Searching " ":   Type phrases in quotation marks e.g.  "culture shock", "international students"
  • AND:   Use AND to focus your search e.g. "culture shock" and "international students" and university
  • OR:   Use OR to expand your search. e.g. university or college or "higher education
  • Limiters:  Use limiters on the left of your search results (e.g. "Scholarly Journals", "Publication Date" etc.)

 

Find Books

Are your sources scholarly?

Scholarly sources are...

  • written by experts for a specialized audience
  • discusses or analyzes original research
  • contain technical jargon and disciplione specific vocabularly
  • cite and document resources used
  • usually published in a peer reviewed journal or an edited academic book
