Look at the attached patent and answer the following questions:

  • Who is the inventor?
  • Who is the assignee?
  • When was the patent applied for?
  • When was it granted?
  • Which date is relevant for determining the patent expiry date?
  • What is the International Patent Classification associated with this patent?
  • What does the specification encompass?
  • Within the specification, what problem(s) does it solve or benefit(s) does it offer over other similar inventions?
  • How many claims are included in the patent?  How many of those are independent?  Dependent?
  • BONUS: What is this invention more commonly known as?

Group Exercise #2

Look at the attached patent and answer the following questions:

  • There are a number of dates included in this patent.  Which one(s) do you think are the most important?
  • What do you think 'field of search' refers to?  How might that be useful when doing patent research?
  • How many claims are made?  How many are independent?  How many are dependent?
  • BONUS: Which drug is associated with this patent?
