The following style guides explain how to cite sources in text and create a reference list according to APA style.
The APA Style website has an extensive collection of reference examples for different types of sources. All examples below are adapted from the APA Style website.
Reference format: Name of individual or organization [handle if used by the platform]. (Date of post). First twenty words of caption as the title [Post type e.g. Video, Photograph, Status Update, Tweet]. Name of platform. URL of the post
See the APA Style website for social media reference examples.
Example reference: Washington Post [@washingtonpost]. (2019, December 3). News is all around us #frozen #newsroom #newspaper [Video]. TikTok. https://vm.tiktok.com/x2sKUu
Example in-text citation: (Washington Post, 2019)
Example reference: News From Science. (2019, June 21). Are you a fan of astronomy? Enjoy reading about what scientists have discovered in our solar system—and beyond? Works that cannot be accessed or recovered by readers, such as personal conversations, interviews, emails, text messages, online chats or direct messages, or letters, can be cited in the text as personal communications. Because they aren't available to readers, personal communications are not included in the reference list.
For further information, see the APA Style website's page on personal communication.
In-text citation format: (Initials and surname of communicator, personal communication, exact date)
Example in-text citation: (T. Nguyen, personal communication, February 24, 2020)
If the communication has been recorded and is recoverable by readers (e.g. as a video, audio recording, or written transcript, or is quoted in a book or article), cite it in the text and include a reference list entry in the correct format for that type of source.
