UTSC Undergraduate Research & Creative Forum

The UTSC Library and the Office of the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation are proud sponsors of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Forum(URCF). The URCF gives talented UTSC students an opportunity to gain experience disseminating research, scholarship, and creative activities to an academic community and develop their presentation skills. The Forum also gives students a platform to share their experiences so that other UTSC students can learn more about the accomplishments and research or creative interests of their peers.

Eligibility

All currently enrolled UTSC undergraduate students from any major and all academic levels of study are eligible to present their work in one of two presentation streams:

  • Creative Project
  • Research Project

All students must have faculty support to publicly present their research or creative project.

Undergraduate research and creative activities being presented must have been pursued during the Summer 2022, Fall 2022, or Winter 2023 semesters.

Criteria

The Forum focuses on knowledge translation, which refers to the translation of research findings into knowledge available to others beyond academia. In the context of a creative project this will involve the student describing their creative process to the audience in order to give the audience insights into the work of creative professionals. Information must be presented in accessible, non-technical, non-specialist language that can be understood by a layperson or non-specialist as well as by the expert.

Application Process

  • Submit your work to one of the two presentation streams:
    • Creative Project
    • Research Project
  • Complete the submission proposal form by the February 14, 2023 deadline.
    • Abstracts and creative statements cannot exceed 300 words. Refer to the FAQs for additional guidance on what to include in the abstract and creative statement.
  • Ask your faculty supervisor / instructor to complete the faculty support form in order to be eligible.

Successful applicants will be contacted by end of day February 28, 2023.

The Forum

After a three year hiatus, the URCF is returning as an in-person event! The 2023 Forum will showcase the scholarship and creative activities of UTSC undergraduate students in-person on April 4, 2023.

Each finalist's research poster or creative display will be available for viewing from 9am-5pm on April 4, 2023, with finalists on hand for 2 hours to present their work, answer questions and received feedback from fellow UTSC students, faculty, staff, librarians, family and friends. Digital facsimiles or posters, creative displays and/or presentation recordings will also be posted on the library website for viewing prior to and after the URCF.

Awards & Recognition

All finalists will receive a notation on their transcript as part of Co-Curricular Record program, an honourarium to recognize their research and creative excellence.

Finalists’ posters, displays, and/or presentation recordings will be posted to the UTSC Library website, with the invitation to have a digital version of their work permanently archived in TSpace.
