Find Books: LibrarySearch (Catalogue)

Use this guide to learn how to find books on your research topic in the LibrarySearch on the UTSC Library Website.

To get started.....

  • Establish the keywords for your topic.  These are generally the main nouns from your search question.
    • Example:  If you were researching the relationship between identity and immigration.   Your keywords would be identity and immigration.

LibrarySearch: LibrarySearch is a discovery catalogue located on the UTSC Library Website.  Type your keywords in the search box to begin your search.

Type your keyword search:  Notice the word 'AND' between identity and immigration.  'AND' is an example of a boolean operator.   Typing 'AND' between both keywords means that you'll only get results that include both terms - identity and immigration.

Use limiters to focus search results:   Examine the limiters down the left side of the search screen and choose the ones that are relevant to your topic.

Example:   For this topic, we might select Social Sciences (because this is a Social Sciences class) and English to focus on English language books.

Arrange your search results by date:   Select Sort by in the left of your search screen and then select Date-newest.  The most recently published books will now appear at the top of your search results.

Why?   Social Sciences topics generally require up-to-date sources to ensure they are still relevant to your research.

Choose Scholarly Books:   Remember that you need scholarly books for your university-level essay.  So be careful to pick books published by academic or universities publishers and written by discipline experts.
