What is LibrarySearch?

LibrarySearch lists all of the resources in the University of Toronto Libraries' collection. You can use it to search for:

  • Books and ebooks
  • Print and online copies of newspapers, magazines, and journals
  • Audiovisual materials (including DVDs and streaming video)
  • Cartographic material (maps and atlases)
  • Microfiche and micoform

How to Search the Catalogue

To search the catalogue, use the search box on the library homepage

Don't type out your complete research question. Break down your topic into the most important concepts - they are people, places, time periods, or issues. If you need help, check out the library's help page on choosing good keywords

Combine your search terms using Boolean operators: AND, OR, and NOT.

  • AND tells the catalogue to give you search results that contain all of the terms you entered. Use this to combine main concepts.
  • OR tells the catalogue to give you search results that contain any of the words you entered. Use this to combine synonyms and related terms.
  • NOT tells the catalogue to exclude search results that contain the word you entered.

You can also click on advanced search for other search options, like subject, author, etc.

Viewing Results by Item Type

Search results from the catalogue are grouped by item type (articles, books, journals, videos & DVDs, etc.). To see the complete list of results for a specific item type, select the type under Format area along the left side of the screen.

How to Limit Results to Online Resources

The catalogue includes print books and online books (eBooks). To limit results to online books only, check off the box next to Online under the Show Only area along the left side of the screen.
