Curriculum Mapping

This guide will introduce librarians to the basic principles and processes of curriculum mapping.

Mapping Library Instruction

Whether your library has a cohesive instruction program, or individual librarians develop their own instruction goals or learning outcomes, you can curriculum map library instruction as a group, or individually. You can choose to map courses according to your own learning outcomes, or according to ACRL Information Literacy Standards.

How To

Adapting the Basic approach to CM, librarians fill in the map for the courses in which they offer library instruction, noting which learning outcomes or IL standards are included in their instruction and whether they are introduced, reinforced, assessed, or not addressed.

Examine the completed map through the lens of the information that you know about program goals and requirements, course details, etc. Identify gaps and redundancies, and explore possible solutions. Consulting with faculty throughout the process can be helpful.

If you have limited information about programs and courses, then you can examine your map as a way of organizing your instruction to set appropriate outcomes across the course/year levels. You could then use the map as a tool for approaching faculty to discuss opportunities for integrating information literacy and library instruction, or collaborating on instruction.
