3D printing at the UTM Library

3D printing is now available at the UTM Library in the Digital Exploration Lab.  To book a 3D printer, see the link at the bottom of this page.   

You can book up to 4 hours for your print.  If you require more time, please let me know.  To estimate how long your print will take, you can use these tables as a reference:

Some notes about 3D printing:

  • Printing is free for academic purposes
  • There is a limited variety of filament colours at any given time, however, white or black filament should always be available
    • You can paint your 3D prints afterwards

3D printing basics

3D design and printing workflow

Below are general steps used to create and print 3D models:

  1. Design a model in 3D design software like Tinkercad (web app) or Blender (download and install) or other design software.
    It is also possible to download already created 3D files at websites like Thingiverse where you can download and then modify the files in Tinkercad.
  2. Save or export your model as an STL - stereolithography file. 
  3. Open your STL file in a "slicer" program.  The UTM Library uses Ultimaker Cura for this.  When you slice a file, it prepares the model for printing.
  4. Send this new file to the printer and begin printing.
  5. Wait.
  6. If desired, finish file by sanding, painting, and protecting.
