Using Generative AI

Generative AI tools can make many tasks easier, but it's important to consider how we use these tools, how they work, and to take a critical eye to the content and information they create. Use the links below to think through the various implications of using them, as well as learn the U of T guidelines to AI use.

Evaluating Sources

Need help identifying and evaluating your sources?  Check out the links below:

Finding Articles & Checking for Peer-Review

Have a citation and need to find the article?  Check out the UTM Library's Find an Article from a Citation guide.

Not sure if your article is scholarly and peer-reviewed? Check out our video for instructions on how to search Ulrich's Periodical.

Finding Books

Need help finding books using a citation?  Check out the University of Toronto Libraries' guide, LibrarySearch Tips, or our guides below:

Google Scholar

For instructions on how to connect Google Scholar to UofT Library's collection, click here.

Sources indexed on Google Scholar include:

  • journal articles (peer-reviewed and not peer-reviewed)
  • books
  • book chapters
  • legal cases
  • legislation
  • patents
  • pre-prints
  • grey literature
  • documents from university repositories

Google Scholar includes books and book chapters as well as articles.  The 'Get Full Text' links won't work for these or for journal articles that are only available in print (not online).  To find books, search our catalogue using the title. (See the Finding Books box above for instructions.)

Google Scholar indexes articles that are peer-reviewed and not peer-reviewed.  If you're not sure if a journal is peer-reviewed, use Ulrich's Periodical.  For instructions on using Ulrich's, check out the Finding Articles & Checking for Peer-Review box above.
