UTM Library Science Literacy Week 2015: Our Events

Here is the overview the campus-wide events we have lined up for everyone during Science Literacy Week 2015: Exploration & Innovation (September 21-27), a Canada-wide celebration of science:

  • Live science demonstrations including Arduinos, 3-D printed objects, chemical reactions, DNA extraction, rocks and fossils. Demos are located outside the library in the CCT Link and run at various times through the day between 10 AM and 4 PM daily September 21st to 25th:
    • Monday, September 21, 1 - 4 PM:
      • Amanda Facciol and Sundus Ansari are promoting geology at the Tuzo Wilson Club table.
      • David Patch and Stephan Singh are offering the Concentration Challenge using a spectrophotometer David has built using and Arduino board and dollar-store supplies.
    • Wednesday, 12 - 4 PM:
      • Sara Mason and "Let's Talk Science" students are presenting various experiments, activities, and free swag.
      • Amanda Facciol and Sundus Ansari are promoting geology at the Tuzo Wilson Club table.

    • Thursday, September 24, 12-4 PM:
      • Sara Mason and "Let's Talk Science" students are presenting various experiments, activities, and free swag.
  • Free public science lectures by UTM faculty:
    • “Fossilizing the Oldest Animals” by Prof. Marc Laflamme (Tuesday, September 22, 6-7 PM in DV3130CC Council Chambers)
    • “The Human Brain as the Ultimate Resource: Why Innovation Will Provide More than Enough for Tomorrow” by Prof. Pierre Desrochers (Thursday, September 24, 6-7 PM in DV Faculty Club).
  • Biomedical Communication and Illustration Program's student animations and graphics, available for viewing all week long in the Library T-Room on the ground level of the library beside the Information and Loans desk.
  • A constantly changing array of books addressing the themes of exploration and innovation, ready to be checked out and featuring custom-designed bookmarks by artist/scientist Lindsay Coome and graphic artist Mariya Younas.
  • Unique limited edition buttons designed by Lindsay Coome and Mariya Younas.
