Student Family Housing: Financial Literacy

A guide to support the March 24, 2021 workshop on financial literacy.

This guide accompanies a workshop for Student Family Housing residents that introduces participants to financial literacy.  A copy of the presentation used in the workshop will be uploaded after the session.

This guide and workshop is designed to support these learning outcomes:

  • Students will be able to define financial literacy
  • Students will be able to assess their own level of financial literacy and identify knowledge gaps
  • Students will be able to describe and use Web-based financial literacy resources

While the workshop and guide will highlight five basic, simple strategies students can use to take charge of their finances, the focus here is on providing information resources that students can use to develop their own skills and knowledge in this area.

The workshop and guide will not:

  1. Provide information information specific to individuals' personal circumstances or situations - information provided will be of a general nature only.
  2. Recommend specific financial products or services.
  3. Function as a substitute for professional legal, tax, investment, accounting, financial or other advice.

Participants are encouraged to share their own experiences and recommend tools or resources.  We can all learn from one another!

A big thank-you to Maria Ruiz, former 2017-18 GSRA and now IMI Reference & Research Specialist for the Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Centre, UTM Library, for contributing content to the original version of this guide.
