Assignment - Building the Digital Exhibit

Many museums and art galleries will create or re-create the experience of an exhibit online. Here are some tips and tricks to think about when you are building your own exhibit. There are 

What does an online/virtual exhibit aim to do?

  • Tell a story 
  • Interpret objects or events
  • Provide context 
  • Can act as an academic product 
  • Creates an experience 

When planning your exhibit, ask yourself:

  1. What are the primary goals of the website?
  2. Who is the audience? Think of primary and secondary audiences.
  3. What sections will the website/exhibit include? This can include:
  • Links
  • Images
  • Text
  • About section
  • Contact info?

Remember, when choosing items, think not only about their visual appeal, but also how they add to the story you are telling. 

  1. What is the extent of your content?
  2. How will you organize your content?

Why create an Online Exhibit?

There are many reasons why institutions would create online exhibits. These include:

  • Fulfilling an educational mission
  • Bringing awareness to underused/under represented materials
  • Showcasing fragile materials
  • Broadening audience reach
  • Embedding additional educational content

  • It offers a new view, context, or perspective on a topic 
  • Presents existing information in a new/interesting way 
  • It makes innovative use of media
