English as a Second Language

Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB)
The mission of the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB) is to promote the coherence, effectiveness and consistency of adult English as a second language instruction across Canada by linking all adult ESL stakeholders, maintaining standards in ESL training, and facilitating the implementation and use of the CLB and the CLBA. The CCLB is a non-profit, federally incorporated organization.
ESL Infusion
This site was developed by a team of researchers led by Antoinette Gagne at the Centre for Educational Research in Languages and Literacies, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. It aims to help teachers to meet the needs of ESL learners in K-12 classrooms. Contains a wide range of useful resources and a forum to discuss ESL issues and share ideas.
International/Heritage Language Teacher Resources
A site prepared by the Multilingual Association of Regina (MLAR) which contains a bibliography of teaching materials used in international/heritage language schools in Canada.
Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
The LINC program is designed to provide basic language training to adult newcomers in one of Canada's official languages, and facilitate the social, cultural and economic integration of immigrants and refugees.
Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages
OCOL provides a range of services, products and information to promote better relations between English-speaking Canadians and French-speaking Canadians.
The Official Languages Programs
The Official Languages Programs are administered by the Council of Ministers of Education of Canada (CMEC). They consist of the Official-Languages Monitor Program, and the Summer Language Bursary Program. Both of these programs provide teaching and learning opportunities in English as a second language and French as a second language for Canadian postsecondary students.

This searchable database of (mainly American) resources provides links to websites, online publications, publishers, instructional materials, programs, list serves, databases, and other resources to support foreign language programs. It is co-sponsored by the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education (NCBE) and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics.
ERIC/CLL Resource Guides Online
Resource Guides Online have been produced by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics on a number of topics related to applied linguistics and second language education. Each guide includes information on relevant ERIC/CLL publications, publications from other sources, web sites, organizations of interest, and conferences. The guides also offer searches of the ERIC database.
Ethnologue
This outstanding site is the online version of Ethnologue, the standard directory of languages of the world. It describes in detail 6700 living languages is searchable by country, language family or language name.
National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition & Language Instruction Education Program (NCELA)
The NCELA is operated by George Washington University and funded by the U.S. Department of Education to collect, analyze, and disseminate information relating to the effective education of linguistically and culturally diverse learners in the U.S. NCELA provides information through its web site and produces the news bulletin, Newsline.
Pathways Guide & Kit: Common European Framework
“Pathways” - guide and kit - aims at supporting ownership and contextualization of the Common European Framework of the Reference for Languages (CEFR). The guide provides a user-friendly tool for accessing the ‘nitty gritty’ of the CEFR. The kit assists teacher educators in devising training paths for understanding the principles of the CEFR and for envisaging links with classroom practice.
Search ERIC (Public ste)
This web page provides links to sites for searching the ERIC database. The ERIC database contains bibliographic records of articles and documents related to the field of education. The ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics contributes the entries on second language instruction and learning to the ERIC database.
