The ACS Style Guide, 3rd ed., is the standard citation style for chemistry. Note an expanded and completely modernized edition of the ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication was released in January 2020.

Managing citations

Collecting and organizing citations can be one of the more frustrating tasks of research. Citation management software can help you save time by:

  • collecting citations (to articles, books, websites, etc.) from databases, library catalogues, web, etc.
  • organizing, editing and searching for citations
  • inserting and formatting citations and bibliographies into word processing
  • automatically formatting and reformatting references in particular styles e.g. APA, ACS, CBE/CSE or a particular journal's style

No citation management software is perfect! However, citation management software can save you valuable time formatting and organizing your research.
