News Databases

The Library has a large collection of news resources beyond what is freely available on Google     Please see below and ask if you have any questions.

Set up Alerts

Many databases allow you to set up alerts, so you'll receive an email when new articles  are published on your search topic.   For example, if you're using a  Proquest database (like Canadian Newsstand or US Newsstand), you can select Save search/alert and then Create alert to set up an alert. For more information, read How to Setup Email Alerts From Proquest.    Using a different database?   Look for options to set up alerts within that database.

select save search/alert to set up an alert

Evaluate News Sources

  • publishes accurate content; checks facts, and if errors are made, corrects them
  • uses reputable sources (people, documentation) and verifies those sources
  • presents headlines which accurately represent the article content; headlines don't play on readers' emotions
  • clearly identifies authors of articles with bylines
  • produces its own content; doesn't merely aggregate content from other sources
  • clearly identifies content types (e.g. report vs. editorial)
  • conducts reporting not just editorializing
  • employs journalists who follow the profession's code of ethics
