This course offers an introduction to contemporary Chinese art, including the historical and theoretical themes such as globalization, the socialist and post-socialist condition, and the neoliberal world order. It is organized thematically with readings that introduce student to key issues in contemporary Chinese art, and provide them with examples of in-depth research. Students can expect to:

  1. gain a richer understanding of contemporary art and visual culture of China
  2. familiarize with sources on contemporary Chinese art and cultivate research skills
  3. develop the vocabulary and analytical skills of critical inquiry.
