About this Guide

Why is open access important for research in education?
Understanding Open Access (OA) is increasingly important for all academics, students, and researchers interested in scholarly communication and the distribution of and access to scholarly research. In the field of education, open access initiatives have great potential not only to improve the distribution of academic research within the academic community but also to build stronger connections between education researchers and practitioners and extend the reach of education research to developing nations.

What is open access?
Very simply, "open-access literature is digital, online, free of charge and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright holder" (Suber, 2004). According to John Willinsky's access principle, OA also fosters a commitment to the social value of academic research and the responsibility to ensure that this work is shared "as far as possible, and ideally, to all who are interested in it and all who might profit by it" (Willinsky, 2006, pg.5)
