This series of workshops touches on personal and business/corporate financial and tax literacy relevant to entrepreneurs, startups and small business owners. Watch this space for new workshops throughout the year.
Please note: Workshops with four or fewer attendees will be canceled. All workshop are free and registration is required. However, if you cannot attend a workshop, and fail to withdraw 48+ hours in advance, thereby preventing others on the waitlist from filling in your spot, your library account will be charged $10 per missed workshop.
This workshop will touch on Canadian Tax system (why do you need to file a tax return, where does your tax dollars go, etc), common types of incomes, deductions, and credits, the Climate Action Incentive deductions and some of the benefits and credits related to tax filing. The presentation will also promote the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program and how participants can either participate in the program or access the free tax preparation services.
Facilitators: Peggy Chan and Andria Cullen, Liaison Officers, Canada Revenue Agency
Peggy Chan joined the Canada Revenue Agency in 2011 as a Taxpayer Services Agent at the Toronto Centre Call Centre. In 2014, she was offered a position as acting Resource Officer shortly before taking on her new role as Collections Contact Officer at the Toronto Centre Tax Service Office. Since then she has worked in various departments at the TSO including Insolvency, Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, and Outreach. Peggy holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto – St. George Campus with a double major in Sociology and English.
Andria Cullen started her career with CRA in 2007 as a Call Centre Agent answering general Income Tax enquires. In 2008, she was trained to answer questions regarding Federal and Provincial Benefit and Credit Entitlements. Andria became a Resource Officer in 2010 assisting phone agents. She provided technical support and feedback to agents regarding the handling of calls. In 2012, Andria was selected to provide New Hire training to new CRA agents and she did so with great success. She spent several years working in Non-filer before recently transitioning to CVITP and finally Community Outreach in 2019.
This seminar is offered to owners of small businesses and self-employed individuals who need help in understanding their tax obligations. The presentation is geared towards unincorporated businesses and will provide participants with the basic principles and resources needed to navigate the tax system.
During the seminar, the Liaison Officers will:
• Explain common tax errors
• Demonstrate how to use financial benchmarks for relevant industries
• Provide information on the CRA’s services
• Explain general bookkeeping concepts and best practices
Nathaniel Momongan is a Liaison Officer at the Canada Revenue Agency. He joined the agency in 2008 and has been a part of the Income Tax Audit Division since 2014. Nathaniel holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Ryerson University.
Mithilah Mahendran is a Liaison Officer at the Canada Revenue Agency. She joined the agency in 2015 and became a part of the Income Tax Audit Division in 2018. Mithilah holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree from York University, and a Diploma in Accounting from Seneca College.
