Where to find materials & costing information

You can find design information in the library catalogue or an eBook collection like Knovel. To access online resources, sign in with your UTORid.

You can use the keywords below as search terms.

In the library catalouge, you can filter your results. For example, you may want to filter for only items at "Engineering & Computer Science Library" within the Call Number "T-Technology".

Materials selection

To find information about materials selection, try a search using terms such as:

  • materials selection
  • materials
  • materials engineering design

If you are designing for a specific purpose you can additional search terms like "sustainability" or "product design".

You can also search a specific material, e.g.:

  • plastic
  • steel
  • aluminum
  • cast iron

Materials properties

Use the search term materials properties to find information. You can find more specific information by adding search terms such as:

  • concrete
  • plastics
  • thermoplastics
  • ceramics

Cost estimation resources

The Engineering & Computer Science Library has a number of engineering costing handbooks in the Reference section that can help you estimate costs of designs. Many of these are located in the TH435... section. Below is a sample of costing books from the Reference Area that may be useful in your project:

Canadian weather trends

Search the website below to find information about weather trends in Canada, including precipitation, humidly and temperature highs and lows. Hint: You may need to know the name of a weather station to find information. Under the Historical Data link you can search for stations by region. Different weather stations collect different types and amounts of information, so you may need to look at multiple stations to get the information you need.
